    ATS (Applicant Tracking System)

Also known as: Applicant Tracking System, Recruiting software, Candidate management system

Software that manages applications, recruiting pipelines, interviews and onboarding for HR teams and staffing agencies.

The ATS is the operational core of any talent acquisition team. It centralizes CVs, open positions, interview stages, feedback and candidate communications, automating repetitive tasks such as CV parsing, scheduling and reminder emails.

In consulting firms an ATS integrated with a PSA is critical: the same platform can connect a staffing request from delivery to an open position in recruiting, cutting time-to-fill from 60 to 30 days. Key features include kanban pipelines, LinkedIn and job board integrations, automated scoring, fee and clawback management for placement-fee positions.

Any automated ranking of candidates has to be explainable, and that is a practical requirement before it is a legal one. If a recruiter cannot tell a hiring manager why one profile sits above another, the shortlist gets ignored and everyone goes back to searching by hand. Keeping the model inside the ordering and the human inside the decision is what makes the tooling trusted.

The database decays faster than most teams expect. Skills grow, availability changes, salary expectations move, and someone who declined in March may accept in October. Attaching a freshness date to the volatile fields, and down-weighting stale profiles rather than hiding them, keeps the search honest and saves the recruiter the call that opens with outdated information.

    Example

An ATS receives 250 CVs for a senior consultant role: automated screening filters down to 40 candidates, 8 reach the final interview and 1 is hired in 28 days.
